Succession Planning for Organizations

Creating a Competency Model

The standard process for developing a new competency model entails a six- to seven-hour workshop which includes a break for lunch and two other short breaks. If necessary, the length of the workshop can be shortened around 5 hours, although we prefer that participants have more time as the various steps in getting to a final list of competencies can be mentally challenging. Still, it can be done in this abbreviated time-frame, particularly if participants

If the model is being created for a position, we recommend that superiors, peers, and subordinates to the person in this post be included in the workshop, with the ideal number between 7-10 total participants. If the competency model is going to be developed for a group of people, such as all department directors for an organization, we suggest that each director be included in the workshop to establish the list of competencies.
